Step 1 - The Eco-Schools Committee
The following is a general description of the committee: Issues related to environment and students' well-being are the main concern of SM St Michael Penampang. To ensure the welfare of the school and students, Madam Marie Yong the Excellent Principal introduced the Eco School Programme. She started with by forming the Eco School Committee and the Eco Squads. The Eco School committee is represented by students, teachers, principal, non teaching staff, Parents, local residents, local council, and other external organisations. The Eco Squads are led by teachers and the members are the students who volunteered themselves to be part of the Eco Squads.
The following groups are represented in the committee: - Pupils
- Teachers
- Non-teaching staff of the school
Gardener, canteen operator, cleaner, clerical staff, school security guard
- School Management
- Parents
- Local residents
individual residents, residents committee, village head, Jawatan Kuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung
- External organisations/companies/NGOs/local council

The committee members are chosen in the following ways: A combination of the above
School students volunteered themselves to join the Eco School Committee and some students were nominated and elected by the principal and teachers. The school principal also nominated and elected the non teaching staff to be involved in the Eco Committee because she wanted all members of the school to be responsible of the school's well being. Some local residents volunteered themselves to be in the committee as they were amazed with what the school has done to preserve and conserve the environment not only in school but also to the nearby residential areas and Villages. SM St Michael also invited the Penampang District Council to be in the Eco School Committee.
Parents under the Parents Teachers Association are automatically elected as the Eco School Committee members as they have to support their children's school.
